What is Test and Tag?

Testing and Tagging is a necessary procedure for the electrical safety checking of appliances which minimise the risk of electrical shock to workers.

Each piece of equipment is inspected, tested and tagged according to the Australian standard (AS/NZS 3760:2010). A records of tests is kept as part of your overall OH&S risk management documentation and assists forecast budgets.

Why is it important?

It is mandatory of all employers and self-employed to ensure electrical equipment is safely maintained as part of fulfilling their OH&S obligations.

No workplace in Australia is exempt from electrical safety. Testing and Tagging of all electrical items has proven to be the most efficient and cost effective method to demonstrate electrical safety compliance.

How often does my workplace need Testing and Tagging?

When understanding the test and tag intervals and how often an electrical appliance should be tested, the main underlying factor is the type of environment that appliance is located in.

The AS/NZS 3760 standard (Table 4) should be seen as a minimum requirement. A lot of workplaces will have different test and tag frequencies because of their own risk management and OH&S planning.

For the most common environments, we recommend the following frequencies:

  • 3 months - building, construction and demolition
  • 6 months - factories, warehouses and production
  • 12 months - an environment where the equipment/supply cord is prone to flexing or open to abuse
  • 5 yearly - an environment where the equipment/supply cord is not prone to flexing or open to abuse
